I'm officially home again after four great days in Austin, but Wednesday, I walked into the office just in time to catch a conversation about racism.

Not a good way to start things off.

Point #1: Mark Twain books should be banned because they're offensive and racist. Let's take a vote: who thinks that's the stupidest thing you've ever heard? Mark Twain books reflect the time period; if you're going to ban them, then you have to ban all the classics that have the "N word". One of my anchors, who's black, claimed to be very offended by Mr. Twain's Huck Finn, but I'm not buying it. That anchor doesn't care about Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn or Jim—he cares about being offended, because that's the fashion of today, isn't it? Having something to bitch about.

Worse, when the anchor told me he was ready to film this afternoon, I asked whether his roundtable panel was "mixed". (For the first episode, he had an all-black panel discussing the topic of racism.) He asked, "Why do you have to ask me that? Does it matter?" I got so frustrated because yes, it matters—we're marketing it as a show for everyone, and the audience perception will change if they see only one racial group in every episode. K (our entertainment editor) said I brought it up too much, but I keep bringing it up because he keeps avoiding the question. Avoidance means he doesn't have a mixed panel, but trying to hide that by insinuating I'm a little racist is ridiculous.

I was very, very unhappy. The day resulted in smaller wars, too, like when our marketing director (a big title for a small job) asked—as I was working—if I could start putting the office chairs back in the places. That may seem petty, but I was doing something and he was just texting on his phone, so I said, "No, but you can."

And the person I'm training as my replacement? Is a douchebag. I have no other word to describe him. He argues with everything I say. After watching his latest video project, I said it was great, but there were just two things to change. The first was one of the lower-thirds (the name of an interviewee that appears in the bottom corner of the screen). He made it so that the name just... started floating upwards. No rhyme, no reason, just floating. The second was the intro screen, which had already been used in a previous episode.

He gave me a headache about both of them. Having a floating lower-third isn't a creative decision, but he acted as though I was destroying his vision. None of the other lower-thirds moved, so it was completely random anyway. Secondly, he nearly convinced me that using an old intro screen was okay—until one of the anchors brought up that it didn't really make sense. Halfway through the export, I canceled it all and designed another screen so that people wouldn't be confused.

I'm the multimedia editor, but I don't take it too seriously. The anchors and videographers are given almost complete creative control over what they do; rarely does anyone breathe down their necks. But I would be failing if I let elements start floating around on-screen or allowing the use of recycled images, so for once, I made some decisions. After all, writers send in their stories and those stories are proofread; if necessary, content is changed (when information is incorrect or something is poorly phrased) by their respective editors. What I did was no different.

That night, during speech class, one of our classmates said he thought black Americans should be called "African-American descendants" (instead of just African-Americans). I thought it was sort of a mouthful, and he grew huffy and asked, "What do you think we should be called? What are white people called? What is a white person?" and I finally snapped, "Someone who isn't black."

Blacks have a horrible history, but damnit, so do women. We tempted Adam, we bewitched Salem, we were the sexual spoils of war, and now I walk into the office just to have a man argue with everything I say.

Amid all the guitaring I've done as of late, I've been writing lyrics frequently again. Here's something I just composed. I know it sounds a little preachy (can an atheist be preachy? I dunno), but it's actually about embracing any kind of positivity, be it through a higher power, or more importantly, within yourself. Ironically, I envisioned this as a screamo song, haha. Been listening to too much Thursday and Flyleaf.

I had my Physics midterm today. I spent over 14 hours studying for it yesterday, and then I went to bed late and then woke up early today to study some more. I honestly thought I was prepared, but when it came time to take the test I KNEW WHAT I WAS DOING ONLY 40% TIME AT THE MOST. I failed that test so hard, and it always kills me when I work so hard to achieve something and end up failing in the end. It breaks my heart. I came out of the exam close to tears, but I managed to hold it all in until the end of my last class of the day. And then I got back to my apartment and just... started to feel extremely depressed. I have a feeling I'm going to retake this class. It's that bad.

I don't feel like bugging my RL friends at the moment, so I turn to you flist. Please, cheer me up. I really need it ;______;

I played my electric guitar, Ariana Rose, for the first time in about four years last night. OH MY GOD. This instrument holds so many memories, and so much potential (even though it tends to detune too easily). Cranked up the gain and exhaled merrily. With this sex machine, who needs a boyfriend? Haha. Needless to say, I can't wait for band practice tomorrow. Muse songs just sound ballsier fed through an amp.

I'm about 100+ pages into Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver ... and I'm contemplating putting it down and going for another book from the stash I'd procured from my trip to KL last weekend. (A most fruitful trip, I must say! Christoph ... *is reduced to pile of drooling mush*) Basically, it's about werewolves, but with a twist (no, no sparkles here): instead of turning during the full moon, their changes are temperature-based - human when it's warm, wolf when it's cold. This girl was attacked by these werewolves when she was young, but one of them saves her from death. Young adult fiction then dictates that this is a cause for blossoming romance, so they both grow obsessed with one another, until a recent attack on one of the girl's schoolmates brings them together through rather bizarre circumstances. Not long after (like, say, a couple of nights of sharing the same room), they fall in love.

Now, I'm bugged because it seems like this is becoming a trend in this kind of books - where the two leads are bland as hell, and the only interesting thing about them is how they're obsessed with each other. Look at the reasons they "fell in love" with each other for: she's mesmerised by his eyes, and he's intoxicated by her smell (more or less). What. There's no other commonality, like similar interests, whatever - nothing, other than these little superficial things. I've no idea what the girl is like, beyond her obsession with these wolves. Her friend does call her out on it at one point in the book (resulting in them not being on speaking terms at this moment), but her retaliation is, "Why can't you be there for me as a friend in trying times like this?" Ugh. Well, when it determines the entirety of your personality, I can see how that can be an irritating thing to deal with. And, oh, her parents are never there. Where have I read this before ...? I wonder.

I'm also wondering when this will be picked up for a movie deal since it's got everything that should appeal to a sizable moviegoing audience nowadays ... I mean, why not, since Wicked Lovely has its movie rights picked up already by some production? Yeesh.

Anyway, I've been watching some videos of Christoph on YouTube. I'm quite stunned to find out that he talks like Landa in real life! Nevertheless, his voice is so dreamy, aye. (And the rest of him, TBH.)



Next week's the last week of school! On Monday, one of the lecturers from the Literature department - who happens to be one of my lecturers for GEK (Cultural Studies) - came in during the EN lecture and talked about further pursuing EN in uni (either as a major or a minor). He posted the list of modules available for this course, and it was then that I realised that this was what I was put on this earth for. Or, okay, in a less dramatic expression, what I wanted to do in life. Apparently, once we've completed the foundation module, we have to take one of these three modules: Reading British Literature, Reading American Literature, and Reading Films and Cultural Texts. Obviously, I'm going for the last one. I'd have considered British Literature too, but it isn't available next semester (oddlz enough, since American Lit. and Films are). And we can just take one - after completing one of them, I can't take the other two. Weird, but I've given up questioning the uni's mechanics, LOL.

It just released yesterday and I'm already putting it on repeat. Some people say you could hear a bit of Jay in the song...? Can anyone tell me?

Haven't been blogging much but there isn't much to talk about anyways XD. Besides school and work I'm just slothing away.

I'm now in my Personal Selling class and bored as fuck. I miss the Koreans :(
